I had my almost 20-year old Carrier furnace inspected and the service guy said the heat exchanger was cracked. He had me feel the spot and I could feel a ridge, but couldn't see it (it was in a dimple like area right inside the top). They said it was under warranty, but still costs ~$475 in labor to replace. No CO detected.
I'm wondering if this is a good investment or if I'm better off buying a new furnace (I assume I could use the existing AC unit). I'd hate to sink $475 in a furnace that might not last much longer (not sure what to expect). I have a Carrier 59TP5, house is a 2 story w/ basement in the upper midwest. The floors are always different in temp enough to be mildly annoying (too cold, just right, too hot) and if a newer furnace helped that it would add a bit of value.
Advice?
