Hey, so my parents have systems that are about 20 years old. Two are still working but could be on their last leg, one has low refrigerant and is preventing the contactor from kicking on and the other has a massive leak. The tech came out and basically said none of them are worth fixing and said we should get 4 new systems. He quoted the price of refrigerant at 100 dollars/lb and said we need 8 lbs in the one with the unknown leak to kick on. When I asked him about a geothermal system, which I saw on their website, he said they don't do that b/c you have to dig a well. He quoted 28 grand to replace all the systems. If I give a generous price of 4 grand to each system that comes out to 16,000 dollars. Is 12,000 dollars to install 4 systems normal? I feel like I could get certified and install it myself for cheaper.
