Carrier System Leak

Hey guys,

We've had a persistent leak in our system for the past 3 years. Normally, I've just had someone come out to top-off the coolant (r410a) but it's getting to be more of a pain than it's worth.

I've had one company come out for around 6 hours to try and find the leak, only for them to tell me that it's "Probably in the wall, I'll just top you off". Not great service.

Having had a friends referral come out and cut through all the usual shite I've been dealing with, he told me that it looks to be the evaporative coil on the furnace. There is a quite substantial build up of rust and, in his experience, that is the main place where leaks occur.

I've called yet another company this morning to see how much they'd charge. A breakdown is as follows:

Leak search - $600-850 Coil - $700-800 Install, top-off & total = $1500-2000

Does this seem right?

Also, what are your thoughts on just replacing the coil and NOT doing the leak search? I've been told a couple of times that it "is more than likely" the coil.

We're looking to sell the house in a year or two so forking out $2000 is NOT my idea of fun right now.

Thanks for any help you can provide!
