higher efficiency furnace requires new duct work?

Currently in the market for a new gas furnace and looking to upgrade from 80% to 90% efficiency. One contractor suggested not to because the vents I have now are only made to handle 80% efficiency. He said the cost to upgrade the vents to 90% isn't worth it.

Another contract said I could upgrade to 90% and keep the vents, but they would have to add a pvc pipe from the furnace to outside. This contractor said something about metallic vent would experience condensation, which leads to possible melting of the duct work?

Can someone explain to me this thing about duct work and higher efficiency gas furnace means? Also what's the need for a pvc pipe to go outside? Is all this necessary just for a higher efficiency?
