hot third floor playroom

We moved into an old early 1900s house this year and had a new HVAC unit installed in the third floor attic. This HVAC unit serves the second floor of our house (probably about 3000 sq ft) and it serves the third floor playroom (about 400 sq ft. The walk-in attic (with the HVAC unit) is right off of the playroom so the ducts blowing into the playroom are fairly strong.

In the winter, the playroom was nice and cozy as expected since heat rises. I actually had to shut the vents off to ensure it wasn't too warm up there. Now that we are getting to the hot part of the year and brutal Tennessee summers, the HVAC unit is struggling to cool the second floor, and the third floor playroom is miserably hot.

Since we don't use the playroom during the school day and at night when sleeping, I thought it may be more efficient to shut the door to the third floor and instead install an electric damper to cut the flow of air to that floor, thus allowing the HVAC to solely cool the second floor. There are no return ducts up there. I would then have the damper open up automatically on days that the kids might use that room. Is this a bad idea or is there a better solution? I was contemplating either this damper or maybe the registers here.. I currently use an ecobee3 thermostat.
