Not Cooling

3 ton Trane unit. Have had to recharge on a yearly basis for 3 years. Simply cannot afford a new unit.

I apparently have a leak somewhere in the system. It usually freezes up when it gets low and stops blowing cool air. Last night, in Texas, it got down to 58F and as was not home to turn the unit off. When I got home, the lines were frozen all the way up to the compressor. Less than three months ago, I replaced the dual run capacitor, start capacitor and a small capacitor that was dedicated to the fan motor. I also cleaned the contractor and cleaned everything up while I was in their.

Now I just called an HVAC guy and he is telling me (over the phone) that I have a bad compressor and need to fork out $1500.

He seemed to think a valve is bad and that's what caused it to freeze rather than low on refridgerant.

Even if a compressor valve is bad, can I not just replace the valve?
