Advice on most efficient cooling situation, Central Air + window AC unit?

I am wondering if anyone had any advice or suggestions on help keeping the bills down by most efficiently cooling both floors.. I've got a raised ranch home, with central air conditioning upstairs. There are no vents/returns for downstairs. I sleep downstairs, and although it's a bit cooler, it can get pretty stuffy in the summer heat in RI in the summer. What I did last year was put a window AC unit in the downstairs window running on low, and kept the upstairs central air on 68-70 usually. The window unit is a good few years old, and I was thinking perhaps of replacing it with a new one, if in fact the best method of cooling would be the combination of both. I was always under the impression that solely running the Central Air to cool both floors would make the unit work harder and run for much longer, and thus not be very energy efficient or good for the unit itself. Is this a wrong assumption? Any suggestions on what would work best? Would be very appreciative!

Also as a side note: upstairs floor is ~1200 sqft, downstairs is closer to 1000. Central Air is an attic unit.
