New Heat Pump (x-post r/hvacadvice)

I had an HVAC tech come to diagnose my Heat Pump system. Turns out the compressor is bad. The system is a Kenmore TCH248AKD1 Heat Pump with an Internaional Comfort EF16J2200A3 Air Handler. This system was installed in 2005.

From my research so far it would seem that I would be better off just replacing the entire unit. The technician also reiterated that. Would that be a fair assessment for a system this old?

If that is the case and I do need a new unit I was attempting to figure out what is the best option. I believe the current unit is a 4 ton unit with electric heat. What would be my best option for a replacement?

  1. I don't have any suggestions on what unit would be best for your situation, but I'm in a similar position. I have an AC unit that was installed in 2004 and has been having problems. I too am looking to replace the unit so I'll look forward to any suggestions others may have. What sort of unit did the HVAC technician recommend?
