(HVAC related)tool choice, go m12 or m18 fuel

I work in the HVAC field (installs not service). Currently own an m18 brushed impact 2010ish model. Have several m18 compact and high cap batteries. It is my all around drill however when i use it to drive tek screws into sheet metal ducts it seems a bit redundant. The impact harfly kicks in. I literally drill the screw through for a good 5 seconds. If I don't stop it just right I easily strip the hole I'm drilling into and the screws don't get a good bite. It does a dandy job of driving in hangers into trusses, something the m12 lags in.

My coworker has an m12 impact. They tap into the sheet metal much easier because it starts impacting at a much earlier rate. Not to mention the screws don't get over torqued easily. They however suffer though when it comes to drilling into heavier gauge metal. The battery life instantly declines when you do heavier tasks. Ive also noticed they are much more fragile and prone to failure when it comes to jobsite accidents. They also seem like they run at max capacity the majority of the time.

I don't have any m12 tools or batteries.

My m18 seems a bit beat and started smelling a bit burnt today, this gives me an excuse to buy new again. I was wondering if the new m18s with their fancy power setting buttons would have the same trouble as my current m18. (Overpowered?) Or if I should just start getting the m12.
