If you install a Trane XV18 ac unit, do you HAVE to also replace the furnace?

Racine, WI: Our 2004 Trane XR12 4TTR2042A keeps tripping the breaker. Apparently the compressor is shot. Someone recommended the XR13 to replace it, but we liked the efficiency and sound ratings of the XV18. He said if we went that route, we'd also have to replace the furnace since they work together and communicate. Is this accurate? Are we stuck in a cycle of older tech unless the furnace and A/C break at the same time?
