A/C isn't working. Told I need to replace everything. Any advice?

I've recently moved and put my house on the market.

I received notification from my realtor that the A/C has stopped working.

I have a Trane unit that's about 8 years old. An HVAC Technician came out today.

I'm transcribing below directly from the voicemail he left me.

He states that the compressor has gone bad, it has "locked up and is drawing over 90 amps."

He recommends replacing the entire system as "I'm going to be looking at 50% of the cost of a new system just to repair this one with a new compressor, roto-locks, refrigerant and everything else that will be required to fix this one."

He recommends a Carrier unit. 14 1/2 seer, $4200 including permit; or 16 seer, $4600 including permit.

Located in South Florida, if that makes any difference.

Would appreciate any insight!
