Better to run the AC for a few hours in the afternoon, or on and off all day long?

Location: Tucson, AZ. Is it better to leave the AC off during the day (no one is home, highs in the 108-111 range) then run it for 4 to 5 hours straight to reach 80 degrees inside the house, OR let the AC run all day and maintain 80 degrees inside. I have a smart thermostat that tells me how much my AC is running. On days when the system is off (from 6:30 AM to 4 PM) it runs for 6.5 to 7.5 hours with most of that running time starting when the AC is turned back on. On days when the AC is on all day, it will run for 9 to 10 hours. I know that I'm saving energy on days when the AC is off, but my big question is: Am I doing long term damage to my AC by running it for 4 to 5 hours straight in the afternoon?

Home: built in 96, stucco, 2 stories, about 1700 sq ft.
