Can you escape a building via a duct system?

I'm working on a writing project, and I'm hoping someone familiar with HVAC systems can give me some insight on this. Is it possible to escape a building (in this case, a theater) via a duct system? In TV/movies you sometimes see this, but I'm just wondering if this is realistic/accurate. In most buildings, I would think the ducts are too small and thin to fit a person and support their weight. I read that the prisoners in Alcatraz used the duct system to escape, but I would imagine an 1850s prison would be much sturdier than a theater, even an older one.

Anyway, hope this question isn't too dumb. I'm trying to think of other ways to escape a building other than via a doorway (fire escape, crawl space, etc).
