Hi guys! Long time lurker, first time poster here. I'm located in the Atlanta, GA area.
I'm looking for your professional opinion on our hvac system. We have gotten three opinions about our Goodman heat pump. The three tech's we have all agree -- Our compressor is shot(long story, but we had our system 'tuned up' at the beginning of the season, and the tech overcharged the system and loaded some stop leak in, which likely caused a premature failure of the compressor).
One HVAC tech(who belongs to the company we had contracted with at the beginning of the season) has recommended that we just replace the compressor. Cost: Just over a thousand. I get the gut feeling that this company is just trying to CYA a bit.
The second opinion we got said that we should replace the whole system and replace the lineset (for both the inside air handler and outside unit) given the age of the system. This would also (in his words) undo the harm caused by the first tech. Cost: $5300
The third opinion we got was to also replace the whole system, but flush the lineset. This would save us some money. He agrees that it is not going to be cost effective to just replace the compressor. Cost:$4500
My heat pump isn't a spring chicken anymore, and I don't want to be the kind of person throwing money at something that won't solve my problems (long term).
If you were in my shoes, what would you do? And why?
