I had posted another thread a short while ago about whether to go with wall units vs entral air. The original thread is here: https://www.reddit.com/r/HVAC/comments/4kwu00/wall_units_vs_central_air/.
As you can see, we decided to go for 2 mini split units - one for the main floor and one for the upstairs. We hired a crew from Home Depot to perform the installation and the service was excellent. However, now that the new systems have been installed, the house is not cooling as expected. Let me explain:
We had a 20 year-old 18,000 BTU unit on the top floor. This was the only unit in the house. It was old and loud but did a good job at cooling the entire top floor (about 850 sq ft) and kept the downstairs a few degrees cooler than outside (an additional 850 sq ft). Wanting a better system to cool the entire house, the Home Depot guy suggested removing the old unit and replacing it with a 12,000 BTU Trane mini split and installing a second 12,000 BTU unit downstairs. This was performed today.
It has now been about 8 hours since the installation and the house is not cooling down. Both units are running at full blast and are expelling cold air but it is just not cooling any part of the house that isn't immediately surrounding the units. The entire upstairs is significantly warmer than before and the downstairs barely feels cooler. It seems that the only areas that are being cooled are those right next to the units.
It is possible that the Home Depot under-estimated the BTUs required to cool the house?
