Hey guys,
About a month or so ago, the 220v line started intermittently tripping the breaker. It seemed to happen when the unit ran for awhile, turned off, and then tried to kick back on a little bit later. I checked the wiring at the contactor to make sure nothing was loose and took an amp reading of around 65 amps. So that explains why the 30 amp circuit was blowing. Already did the obvious stuff like making sure the coils and filters are clean.
The capacitor was reading low about 15% and getting really hot, so I replaced that and also installed a Supco SPP6 hard start I bought from Amazon. In the meantime, I had some local HVAC guys out to check the freon (or whatever it's called now) level and make sure everything else looked good. He confirmed I just needed a capacitor and hard start.
Worked like new for about a month. Today it tripped the breaker again. The unit is a Goodman, about 10 years old. I checked the warranty and it actually ran out just a few days ago. When the HVAC guys came out (a month before the warranty expired), I asked them if the warranty would be any help if the compressor was just shot from age. They said no, since a hard start could still be installed and would fix the issue.
I'm pretty sure I'm dealing with a failing compressor and now I'm out of warranty. Is it time to just replace the whole unit? Think I should contact Goodman to see if there's anything they'll do if I can prove I had someone out last month that wouldn't initiate a warranty claim? I know, I can call them. But it's Sunday, they're not answering, and I'd like to be armed with a little bit of knowledge when I get ahold of someone.
Thanks for your help.
