Help: Came home to hot house, fan not kicking on

Hi guys,

I have a central AC unit built in 2006, so about 10 years old. It's an American Standard Heritage 14.

When I got home the house was 78 degrees by the thermostat, and it was set on 70. Normally the system has no problem keeping the house at a comfy 70, even on the hottest day of the year.

Anyway, as soon as I got home I shut off the unit and let it sit for 10 minutes. When I turned it back on, the outdoor unit made a loud buzzing or humming sound but the fan didn't spin up. The registers were blowing warm air. Shut the unit back down for about 10 minutes and checked the filter, condensate drain, and breakers: all were good. I vacuumed out the condensate train and swapped the filter anyway.

10 minutes later, I turned the unit back on but the fan would still not turn on. I kicked it on with a stick, and it's been spinning now for over an hour but it's still warm air.

Obviously I will likely need to call out a technician, but to any HVAC techs here: what do you think it is? Can I provide any additional information?

Here's a photo of our unit's serial numbers, etc. Live in the Raleigh, NC area, so as you can imagine air conditioning is very important!
