Middle floor too hot?

I apologize if this is the wrong place, a dumb question, or incomplete as I know absolutely nothing about HVAC. I'm just looking for some easy trouble shooting I can do at home before I call someone out to the house.

I live in a 2900 sqft (including the basement) craftsman style home. it's listed as 1.5 floors as the second floor living space is smaller within a dormer style roof. Our thermostat is centrally located in the middle of the home, on the first floor. There is a full raised basement.

My thermostat is set for 68. Since it has gotten really hot & humid here in the MidAtlantic, the first floor of my house hovers around 76. The basement is ice cold, and the second floor (if I keep the bedroom doors closed) is pretty cool too, definitely more comfortable than the first floor. I can hear the unit running constantly. I changed the filter. Poked around inside the unit while I was changing the filter, and it looks like everything is connected to something. I've made sure all of the vents are open. Even if I try turning the thermostat down, it only makes the basement and second floor cooler. Is there anything else I can do, or look at, before I call in the professionals?

tl;dr: basement is cold, first floor is sweltering, second floor is cold. wtf.
