Owner with a old Lennox 5 ton unit with compressor that needs replacing. Should I do it myself?

So I got a quote to for the part from a local HVAC company, they said $2400. That sounded wildly expensive, so I looked it up myself and the part is apparently around $800-$900. I'm pretty handy, but I've never worked on an outdoor unit before. They mentioned I'm going to need about 9.5lbs of R-22 as well. Could I use what's in there now?

Is this too big of a job for a newbie? Should I tackle it and save myself time and money? Thoughts? Unit is a Lennox 10ACB60-11P.
