Replacement Thermostat Wiring

We recently moved into a new house. I took my Honeywell WiFi 9000 thermostat from our old house with us to use here. The problem is that there are some extra wires (S1 and S2) connected to the existing thermostat (Honeywell TH7220U1035). From the manual for this one, it appears that these are for remote/outdoor sensors.

I went into the installer settings of the current thermostat, and they have the remote sensor function disabled. I'm assuming I can safely just cap the S1 and S2 wires and leave them disconnected? It doesn't look like they were being used anyway, but then I wonder why they were connected to begin with (it's a brand new house so no former homeowners would've been tinkering).

For reference, we have a heat pump system in this house - Lennox CBX27UH air handler and Lennox 14HPX heat pump.
