I have a window air conditioner that is blowing one of the most putrid smells I've ever encountered. It is the just the worst dirty socks odor that is stinking up my house. I've had to turn it off and I'm currently sweating my butt off because I can't stand the smell from the air conditioner.
Last year, I had the same issue and I was able to take the housing off and give it a good hose down. The source of the odor appears to come from the fan where I was able to scrub off a ton of black specks(mold?) from it and hosed down the inside and outside coils after spraying better life all purpose cleaner on it. The cleaner didn't have any vinegar or alcohol ingredients, so it seemed safe to use. That cleaning got rid of most of the odor. The fan still had a bit of a weird rubbery smell to it, but it was tolerable. This year, I took it apart again and found that the fan and coils stayed relatively clean compared to last year. Gave it another good hose down and let it dry. Once I got it back running, I was stunned when the dirty sock odor just hit me in the face. How could it smell this bad right after I cleaned it?
I think the source of the odor is the fan area. Is it safe to spray the fan area with some vinegar? Will the vinegar corrode any of the parts? I know baking soda cleans and absorbs odor as well. Is that safe to throw down into the fan area as well?
