I just bought a new house, and last night the sound of my exterior heat pump compressor caught my attention. Rather than a steady consistent white noise/hum, the sound of the ?fan? had a consistent rhythm to it... almost like a washing machine with a heavy load, as if rather than spinning in a tight circle, the ?fan? was spinning in more of an oval shape. [p.s., describing sounds with words is really hard]. Is that sound normal?
Immediately after buying the house, I had an HVAC guy out to inspect/tune up the whole system. He said that the coils inside of my interior ?air handler? were the dirtiest he'd ever seen. He pulled out a few fragments of what used to be a hog hair filter, and then spent an hour carefully scraping what appeared to be several years worth of animal hair off of the interior coils. He didn't have a replacement filter, however, because my system requires an irregular/custom shape. On Saturday, I installed this trim-to-fit 4 Merv air filter where the hog hair used to be. Is it okay for me to use this filter?
I'm worried that this filter may be too dense, and that the heat pump is having to work extra hard to compensate.
