I've been handling my house since my mother and father got divorced, and recently the house has had the central unit crap out on us. It's over 35yr old, and when we had a free tune-up, the mechanics said that they couldn't actually fix the unit.
I don't remember exactly what they said, but something to the tune of "The intake fan engine to cool off the compressor has failed, and will need to be replaced. Additionally, the wiring inside has been damaged heavily by the heat, and will need to be fixed. Until those repairs have happened, we can't actually determine if the compressor is working or not."
They then told me that in terms of the cost to repair the unit, and the potential for problems further down the line, it may be better to just replace the unit entirely, since it's so old. They told us about a PACE financing program, and we met with one of them today. He basically set us up for a roof repair (which we desperately needed) and an A/C package (heat and air, I think?) under the PACE program, but when I look at the paperwork, $25,376 seems like quite a bit for a roof job and a new AC system, judging from what I can find about costs.
Additionally, I believe he told me that the per month cost under PACE would be $250~, for 20 years. That equates to over $60,000 over the length of the contract, which doesn't seem to be a reasonable amount.
Does anyone have any experience with this, and whether or not we're getting scammed? I can provide pictures of the paperwork I was given, with the descriptions that the employees wrote about problems and what they're going to be doing to fix them.
I just want to know as soon as I can, since we apparently only have 3 days to cancel the contract if it's no good for us.
