Can the AC fan box be placed inside the house with fan facing window?

I might get one of those smallish (microwave size) box ACs with a fan inside...people usually put it inside a window frame right? Well if it doesn't fit, can i just put it inside the house but by a window and the fan facing outside so it will blow hot air outside?
