I'm cleaning up my attic as part of a project of increasing the blown insulation from R19 to R60. There is a 10-12' section of duct that sticks above some rafters that connects the return vents for a few bedrooms upstairs to a trunkline going back to the basement. This is currently completely exposed.
When I got up there, there was loose bat insulation laid across it, but not much else. Tearing that off and throwing it away, I'm left with a section of duct with no mastic on the seams and some rafter/joist bay returns that connect to it that are somewhat imperfect with their seal to the wood.
The endgame will be burying this thing under a 4-5" deep mound of blown cellulose, but before that happens how should I attack this setup? I'm thinking mastic on the seams, then maybe caulk on the sheet metal to wood joints that are currently just nailed down. Anything I'm missing? Is blown cellulose over it going to be enough, or should this also be covered in something like foil lined foam board and taped up in addition to the cellulose?
