My upstairs bonus room AC (Carrier 1 1/2 ton) has been giving me trouble after trouble. Starting 1 1/2 years ago my AC stopped cooling properly and it was diagnosed to be low freon (R-22) with a leak near the evaporator. I went ahead and paid for a recharge to get us through the summer and by the end of the summer it had slowly leaked out. The next time I had it charged they used stop leak with it (I know how a lot of people feel about it, but I figured I would try it) and on a follow up I was told that the leak was gone. Well now after running great all summer it is not cooling again. What is strange is that I first noticed it yesterday. I felt the freon line by the outdoor unit and it was cool but not cold. Within the hour it had gotten colder again and the system was blowing out 55 degree air at the vent. Now that the room has warmed up enough today for the to come back on it is doing the same thing. This time the freon line is not cold at all and the air is blowing out at 79 degrees. I suspect it is low on freon, but I am really hesitant to just have it charged again if so. What are some other possibilities it could be other than freon? The fan is spinning outside (though I don't know if the compressor is actually moving coolant or not), so the start capacitor is working fine.
