Bought a fixer upper, single story ranch with full basement in New England climate. I'm trying to decide between two quotes. Both contractors seem to be very highly rated.
Option #1 is an American Standard 60,000 BTU variable speed furnace with a 2 ton AC condenser. This company suggested I remove and replace all the current rigid galvanized duct to replace with sealed and insulated ducts. The cost of the furnace install and AC is 8,644 plus 3,700 in ductwork if I choose to go with that suggestion for a total of 12,344.
Option 2 is a Lennox 70,000 BTU variable speed furnace with 2 ton AC condenser. They think the current duct work is fine but have the option of downgrading the furnace to a 66,000 BTU dual speed furnace that knocks about $1,800 off. The variable speed. Their prices are $12,800 for the variable speed model and about $11,000 for the dual speed.
I'm also adding a water heater but both of those quotes were nearly identical.
My question: is the Lennox brand worth that premium and if so, is it worth a variable speed model? If they're not worth the premium and I go with the American Standard, should I spend the savings replacing ductwork like company 1 suggested or just save my money? (Most of this is being financed thru a utility loan but ductwork is not included in that)
