Humidifier Pad Orientation

I was working on a furnace the other day where the humidifier was mounted directly ~3' above the top of the furnace. The H/O regularly replaces their own pads and filters. There was hard water build up on the furnace door, duct and surrounding area. H/O mentioned water has been leaking out of humidifier box (and has been for while judging by hard water everywhere.) When I pulled the pad out I noticed it had been installed upside down (going off of the red/black mark on pad that indicates which way the pad is to be oriented, mark means top BTW.) So, would the pad being installed upside down cause water to leak out of the cover? Seems to me it would.

Also, why don't humidifiers use soft water. Is it because salt?
