We're renting an apartment and just turned the heat on for the first time a week or two ago. The furnace and tank were leaking fuel oil and the basement smells terrible.
The landlord sent over a furnace tech who looked at the tank and said the oil company overfilled the tank and it needed a new fitting so he's going to fix that once we use up some of the oil.
He's coming back to look at the leaking fuel pump on the furnace itself. I just want a reality check on the status of this furnace. It has insulation stuffed into it, it's rusty, and to my very inexperienced eyes looks like it is in terrible condition.
I should also note that the maintenance tag attached to it says "good luck" in 2014 and 2015.
