Need HVAC Advice. Thanks!

Hello r/HVAC,

Looking for some advice here. I have a membership with my air conditioning company and they come out every 6 months to check up on everything. Most visits are pretty cut and dry. “Everything looks good.” About two years ago, a technician was out and said that we had some growth in our system and suggested thousands of dollars worth of work he could do. We passed at the time and have had several visits since then, all of which resulted in the typical, “Everything looks good.” Yesterday’s technician (not the same guy mentioned above) again showed pictures/video of growth (https://vimeo.com/189330075) and put what might be the scare pressure on to do something about it. Also showed this video (https://vimeo.com/189330081) with heavy dust build up and suggested one of those electric air filters that is like a bug zapper. Finally, he talked about how the growth/dust is putting stress on the motor and causing this oil leak (https://vimeo.com/189330076).

His suggested work order is here, http://i.imgur.com/SmWDojc.png.

Now I have to admit, to my obviously untrained eye, the stuff in those videos looks gross and makes me think hard about doing this, but $3,000-$4,000 isn’t exactly a small amount of money. I talked to a couple friends and no one had ever had anything like this work done in their 7+ years in their respective houses (but also never had as thorough of an inspection). Do all of our units look like this and ignorance is bliss, or should I seriously consider getting this work done? Appreciate your help.

Oh and if it’s important to know, we’ve been in our current house in Dallas for 4 years. House was built in the 50s. I would have to see if I could find out how long the current HVAC system has been installed. I am sure have that info somewhere.
