Upgrading to WiFi thermostat, hoping for advice

I just bought a house and would like to upgrade my thermostat. Current thermostat is a basic 4 wire one. I am considering the merits of either using a workaround (Ecobee power extender kit) versus adding a C wire in order to allow me to power a smart thermostat. I am leaning towards just redoing the wiring to make it a nice clean upgrade, since the thermostat is more or less directly above the furnace and it doesn't sound too terribly difficult to run new wire. I would rather do it "properly" rather than relying on some sort of workaround.

But what confuses me is that that the wiring seems like it could already be correct at the furnace. I took the thermostat plate off the wall to see if the c wire was just behind the wall, unused, but didn't see anything other than the four wires (red and white in pairs, two sleeves). The green and yellow wire at the furnace seem to run off toward the air conditioner (in a sleeve of course), but I will confess I didn't have a lot of time to verify exactly where each wire ran. I'm hoping this is enough to get an idea of what my situation most likely is, otherwise I can add other photos or information as needed.

The furnace was installed in 2013. It is a Payne brand.

Thank you!
