Is there a way to make my oil furnace to turn on while the heat pump runs a defrost cycle?

I have dual energy, oil furnace and electric heat pump. The thermostat is an Emerson/White-Rogers programmable. When the heat pump runs a defrost cycle, it blows frigid air into the house. I understand that's necessary, but it would be nice not to feel cold every hour or so in the dead of winter. Any help would be appreciated.
