I hope this is the right place to ask. I live in NYC in a 30 unit apartment building. It's winter right now. The building just installed a new boiler and when I turned on my heat, a terrible smell came out of my steam radiators. Normally the steam has no odor, this time it smelled like burning plastic and rubber. Very strong. I turned it off immediately. What causes this and is it toxic to me and my pets?
Also like 5 years ago they replaced the boiler and the same thing happened again but a slightly different foul odor, oil. I couldn't turn on the radiators at all or my house would smell like motor oil. One of the radiators would not stop smelling and it had to be replaced. Someone said that it was because there was oil lubricating the valves of the boiler and it needed to be flushed (which my building never did) Is the same thing happening?
