Old in-wall air conditioners and new replacements?

Have an old house here, with two old in-wall air conditioners -- Kenmore brand. Model 948991. They both have to run 24 hours a day pretty much to keep things cool in the summer.

I'd love to just slide them out of their wall sleeves and replace them with more powerful ones but... they don't make them like they used to. They measure 12" x 18". All the a/c units I find these days measure larger than that.

Right now I'm shopping around for a portable to make things more tolerable than last summer.

So now I'm shopping portables as I've got some side-opening windows here, window units just aren't convenient. Seems like the newer portables you don't need to empty the water anymore.

Are there any that don't require a hose out the window or is that pretty much required?

Any possibility I could get these old in-walls serviced to be more effective and less noisy? Any idea of the cost?
