Old Outdoor Unit

Greetings.

Our outdoor unit was replaced due to failing reed valves in the compressor. I ordered a generic Goodman unit over the Internet, and a friend installed it on his free time. I paid him for refrigerant. It's been 5 years now. All of this seemed like a good deal at the time, and the results have held up as expected.

My friend has since moved on and is out of reach. But the old outdoor unit remains in my backyard, serving as a plant stand, and the wife has grown tired of it. Time to go.

I can't remember exactly what my friend told me, but IIRC, he used the compressor to draw the old refrigerant into the unit, then sealed it off. In my mind this means that the unit is full of old refrigerant, or at least it was, 5 years ago.

Here are my questions, please help:

Is there a chance that refrigerant remains in the unit after 5 years? If so, is it worth offering for sale on Craigslist? And again, if so, how do I determine the value?

Or is it just best to call Republic Waste and send it off on their free large-item pickup day?

tl;dr - What should I do with an outdoor unit that was replaced 5 years ago, and may be full of old refrigerant?
