Every year for the past four that I've been in this house, the first AC-use of the season has brought this terrible musty/dirty sock smell into the house. Most of the time, it's gone away after a few uses, but this year it's hanging around (better than the first day, but still noticeable). I change my filters regularly, and have let the system run for a few hours to try to "flush" the smell out to no avail.
Googling seems to come to the conclusion that my evaporator could need cleaning, but I've had quotes anywhere from $650 to $1300 for the same jobs, and have had one HVAC guy be kind enough to spend time walking through some additional steps (like cleaning behind the return grills) only to conclude that I probably need duct-cleaning.
So... any more ideas on what might be wrong and what's a reasonable ballpark price for evaporator coil cleaning (in southern california, if that matters)?
