Hey r/HVAC, I'm looking for really awesome and cheap ways of keeping my room cool during the summer. I have a few questions that relate mainly to 1 tool I saw at a friend's house about a year back. Other questions I have are just about OTHER options I have.
Background Information
I live in Central California.
I have 2 old fans. One goes INTO the window vertically.
I have room-darkening blinds blocking MOST of my window.
I live in a duplex and cannot change anything WITH the house.
My room is slightly over 100 square feet.
As summer is approaching, I'm starting to feel the heat. Here in Central California, it's hardly ever below 60 degrees at any point in the year at noon. You may think this is a blessing if you live in other states, but when summer hits it's like someone took a camp fire and set it in your room with no ventilation. We have an AC, but it's rather old (not changed in 12 years), and it costs a lot to run continuously, not to mention the vents do a poor job of circulating what air they do cool down.
I thought about getting a portable air conditioner, but I calculated that it's going to cost a lot per year to use, unless I can get something much smaller than the one I'm looking at. It's a moot point otherwise. The two fans I have don't really COOL the air, much as just circulate the hot air.
I remember going to a friend's house about a year ago, or rather multiple times throughout the year, and they had these things in every room on the floor. Looked like old coffee pots, but they stirred water inside the basin. I don't remember EVER being hot or sweaty inside their house just by being there. I don't know what these were, but they were in every room and I think they were the reason for the air being so cool. They even had windows open during this, so I can't imagine they had any air conditioning on. Does anyone know what I'm talking about?
Really, what I'm looking for is other solutions to cool down my room without costing too much. I want something fairly low maintenance, and not costing more than $250. If it could be a SMALL portable air conditioner with low power usage, that would be AMAZING, but I don't quite know what to look for in that area. If anyone has any suggestions, I'd be very thankful to hear them!
