Hi, HVAC pros, ex-HVAC guy here, 40 years ago. (Time flies, whether or not you are having fun.) We are planning to add HVAC to our "new" 100 year old house. We may add an air handler to our attic, just for the second floor. I want to make sure the job is done right. I have some questions. 1. Do all or most air handlers have both a primary and secondary condensate drain? If so, they should both have a trap, right? Can they share the same trap? If not, the secondary trap should probably be the waterless type like the RectorSeal (RectumSeal) EZ TRAP - right? 2. I understand there should be a pan under the air handler in case the drain(s) clog. a. What material should they be made of these days? b. Do they need to be insulated? c. The drain doesn’t need a trap, right? 3. I gather that the air handler should be suspended from the rafters, not mounted on the joists. a. Would it make sense to install vibration isolators on the hangers? b. What kind? c. The rafters probably should be reinforced to resist the weight and vibration. How would you do that? I’m guessing wood for the 100 year old rafters. Thank you for sharing your time and your expertise.
