Am I paranoid or am I being scammed by dirty sock?

I got a nice new heatpump/ac unit installed six months ago and it runs just fine. The compressor is outside and the rest is in the attic. I have wood floors, I keep a clean house, and I've never been bothered by odors except unrelated times when I come home it find it is overdue time to take out the garbage. Yesterday, I had free winter inspection done by the installing company, free as it is so close to the purchase. I was not paying a lot of attention to the guy but after he enthusiastically pointed out ways for me to "save money" on different things, he turned on the heat and remarked that I had "dirty sock syndrome," and asked didn't I know. He explained it as source debatable but related to the coil I think he said, possibly "organic matter" getting on it. Since it was within first year of warranty, he could get it taken care of by manufacturer with a new "coated" unit (I think it is coil). I told him I didn't smell it and hadn't noticed it. He said, very emphatically like it was bad, "you will." And had me stand where the air was blowing and it smelled like I never had notice before, the odor and strength of it. I later overheard him on the phone with his boss, it seemed, saying "We get the labor though, right?" And I think he meant they get paid by the manufacturer. I later asked about this "coating," and he said it was paint "like on the outside of your boat" (which is unpainted gelcoat). He said they did it here, or had it done locally... I didn't inquire further or that closely... only enough to learn this was not a manufacturers solution..... I remember he also said, very early on before I even actually smelled it, that he "didn't put anything on it," as if being defensive and saying he hadn't even been up there yet. But actually, I think he had been up there a moment as I thought I saw him come down the ladder..... I really don't know what to do about it. Will the new, coated coil be worse for me? I can't prove anything without maybe some serious detective work and maybe also accusing someone of something which I have a hard time believing is likely... Have any of y'all heard of this coating? etc...
