Thermostat Wiring + Issues

I recently swapped my thermostat. This is the old wiring setup:

Notice the yellow wire is in Y/Y2 (with a Y1 that is empty). The new thermostat has Y and Y2 separate. I put the yellow wire into Y since I didn't know what it meant, and last night, all the heat worked perfectly. Fast forward to midday today, and the AC is blowing hot air. I did some research on Y/Y1/Y2 so I swaped the wire to Y2 and now the air is cooler, but doesn't seem how it was before. I went out to my AC unit and saw this:

Apparently my unit is 1 phase compressor, yet the AC seems to work better with the wire in Y2 instead of Y? If I put the wire into Y it blows hot air and if Y2 then it's cooler.

Now let's talk settings. Default is as follows (in bold):

I don't have gas in this house. Currently it's set on HE Gas Forced air and it's cooler than when set to Electric Forced Air. Also It's slightly cooler when Cool Stages is set to 1 stage even though the yellow wire goes in Y2 with an apparent 1 stage compressor.

I'm at a loss as to what's going on. I've tried different combos of wires and settings and the coolest doesn't seem cool enough (although it could be that I just didn't know how cool the air was coming from a vent before. Any other input would be appreciated.
