ON Refrig Union Jobs. (Wall of text sorry)

Hey guys, sorry to bug you but I just had a quick question for anyone out there working in Ontario in refrig.

I've been on the "first year apprentice hire list" for unionized companies for close to a year now but haven't had any bites. My current company has me doing nothing but sheet metal & ductwork and hasn't really taught me anything related to refrig, so I feel like Im in a rut right now as thats really what I'd like to get into. So, does anyone have any tips/tricks as to what I can do on my own time to really stand out to these refrig companies that might be hiring apprentices? I'm fully willing to take weekend courses and other certs if it would be a factor in hirability.

Thanks a ton to whoever could help out!!
