As the title states, I've got a finished 'server closet' which is on the 3rd (and unfinished floor) of our house. When we built, I ran all network drops up there because we planned to finish that space within a year. For various reasons, that hasn't happened yet.
So, I've finished off the little 10x4 closet and hung an insulated door. I've got a small amount of equipment in there, and I've installed a 10,000 BTU portable AC unit from Honeywell. I realize this is more unit than I need, but more on that later...
So essentially I've got very hot attic air (~100-110 degrees) flowing into the server closet when then AC unit is on. This air of course creeps in through the gap under the door, moldings, etc. Here's my question. Is it worth adding a vent in the wall that is in my stairwell? My thought is that the air would be sucked in from a cooled living space, and would then be much less work for the AC unit to cool. The portable unit vents to the open 3rd floor attic space.
