Would you look over my list and tell me what you think is an excessive complaint and what is worth mentioning? The system is about 18 months old and my nest thermostat regularly and accurately indicates it will take upwards of 2-5 hours to lower the house from around 78-80 to around 72-74. Ive put this "complaint" off for so long for a few reasons. They did the energy program and foamed a lot of the attic but I opted out of new insulation because I'm in the middle of a remodel and I can blow it in myself. The sales man of the company was also a close friend and while I feel bad making a complaint/comments about the job he oversaw It needs to be done since we paid almost 15k less 4800 in PG&E rebates. Every thing should have been new "Everything" is not clearly relative to what the person working thinks.
here are the problems I see * Kitchen remodel meant moving a return. He did his math and said the two returns were slightly undersized for a 2.5 ton. Moving and enlarging a return made sense. The workers showed up and according to their math they said the returns were okay and simply moved the existing return. * I felt like since the line set was only about 20 feet they should have simply replaced the whole thing. They did not. Its also a slight tad too short So removing the filter actually hits the insulation, Kind of lame but the filter is changeable. Also the insulation under the house is in bad condition from being 20 years old. *The <new> insulation for the line set is clearly a size too big the line set is about 3/4 and the insulation is 1 1/2 inch?. WTH. Not sure how much of a problem this is but I doubt it helps make the system worth 15k. I feel like they only replace the insulation for cosmetic reasons. * A few of the vents were not sealed from the inside with the white paste stuff. (note they did not pass the leak test the first time) * Although I don't think I have it in writing I was working on a house that had a really nice system. Same as mine almost and I had noticed all the returns and supply grills were all brand new! Then I found my friends business card. I still feel like my returns should have all been replaced as part of a ALL NEW system. * Lastly! it doesn't cool well. Im in central CA valley and even on mild days the system will run non stop to maintain 75. I know I need to add insulation but the old system with the 40% leaking ducts cooled much better. *Worth noting. I have since replaced all single pain alum windows and slider doors with Low E double pane vinyl windows. I went into the attic and sealed the top plates and added foam to the majority of the fixtures that were not properly insulated. In all Ive probably used another 8-10 cans of great stuff up there. Also added an attic fan. * Also The split between the return (72) and the closest supply (55) is decent but the farthest supply is (66) Which I suspected. I will try to drop the ducts to better insulate them eventually with the blow in insulation.
Heres Some photos.
This is after running for two hours. It started at 74f
Sorry for the long post. Thank you for any thoughts. Ive never been very good at calling people out on their work even when Im paying for it. Usually I bite my tongue and in the end everything is great but in this case my house doesn't cool and I paid 15 grand.
