Window A/C unit performing poorly - happy to tinker.

Forgive me if this is the wrong place for this question.

We have a Kenmore window unit (model 75123 or very much like it - here's a store listing), installed (rather poorly) in a horizontal-sliding window. As it's always a bit tricky finding A/Cs for horizontal windows, and generally a few Benjamins more than your average "slide window up, shove A/C in, close window" models, I'm very much inclined to waste a day or two poking and prodding this one in the hopes we can bring it back to full health, or at least more-health-than-right-now.

We installed it in 2008, and up until 2014 it worked perfectly well at cooling a rather-large room with no central A/C. Towards the end of 2015, however, the cooling performance degraded substantially. It's definitely still cooling - the air coming from it is definitely cooler to the touch than the air coming from a desktop fan in the same area - but it's not really cooling much.

Cleaning the front filter hasn't improved the situation much.

Is there any hope for this little fella? Or is the educated consensus that it will be far cheaper to buy a new one than get a professional to fix this one?
