When I set the temperature to a setting where the compressor and fan should switch on, it clicks on for a brief second before immediately clicking back off. It's acting as though something has been tripped. But once in a while, it will just start up normally and blow nice cold air.
The heat will come on every time without fail, and the blower fan will come on if set from Auto to ON, but if asked to turn on the COOL option, it will fail a few times and I will just keep toggling it occasionally and it will randomly kick on. Then, if it reaches set temperature, it shuts off and won't come on again without failing a bunch of times again (Unless I set it to a impossibly low temperature and run my electric up LOL).
Blower and outdoor compressor unit are Lennox, fairly old model that has seen some repairs. Because of it's age, i believe there is little to no safety 'trip switches' in it (I.e. Low coolant detection, water level switch, etc.) Troubleshooting is near impossible due to age as well. We just bought the house in April and we plan on replacing the AC with a new efficient model, but really aren't in a position to do that for a while, and this really seems like something like a bad fuse, relay, or capacitor on the blower/furnace end. There is also a slight hum inside the blower compartment, can't really locate which part it comes from.
What i've done so far:
-Change thermostat batteries
-Reset and move around thermostat to ensure contact
-Check for blown fuses visually (no multimeter on hand, can get one during the week)
-Change filter and allowed 5 - 6 hours between "cooling" cycle to see if any ice was 'preventing' start up but no change
-Tested FAN and HEAT settings to find they work but COOL has the issue
