We have a 1956 2200 sq ft one level w/ full basement home we purchased in Portland OR about 2 years ago. In the far corner of the house, next to the kitchen is what could possible be an original, or at least very old, singer brand AC/Heat unit. Its quite large and noisy, blows coldish air but not a lot of it. To supplement this we put two small window units in our children's bedrooms for the summer. This typically causes the ground level of our home to be just slightly bearable in the heat, while doubling our electrical bill for those months. Currently in our basement we have a 3 year old Carrier high efficiency natural gas furnace. We would like to add central AC, here are my questions:
1) Is it possible to mix brands of furnace/AC units, or should we be focusing only on Carrier installers?
2) The current Singer brand wall unit, has 220 volt power supplied to it through a mid - late 70s era circuit breaker panel. (I've also replaced a 220v kitchen stove with gas, clearing up a spot on the panel). Assuming the area outside of this wall unit is the best place for a condenser unit to go (I think it is). Would it be reasonable to think that a HVAC installer/electrician could make use of this open circuit and current wiring for power? Would this save any money on installation?
3) Do most HVAC installers do their own electrical installation, or is that mostly outsourced to a sub contractor? If so is that mostly a package deal, or is using my own electrician considered acceptable?
