My capacitor blew so we are going to spring for a new ac and furnace. Looking to replace a 3 ton with a 4 ton unit.
It is an older home that has a large single return for the entire second floor. Each bedroom has 1 or 2 vents in the floor. It gets warm in the summer and cold in the winter. The vents don't put out much air.
Our bedroom & bathroom are in an addition over the garage. There is a vent in the center of the bedroom in the ceiling and a vent in the bathroom ceiling. It is much warmer and colder in our bedroom than the rest of the upstairs which is already uncomfortable 8 months out of the year.
The first contractor I had come out said not to worry about adding any extra returns. He said the problem is we aren't getting enough air to the second floor. He also advised to install a fan similar to that in a radon system to increase the airflow to the ducts in the addition.
The second contractor says the first guy is nuts and putting in floor vents and a return in the addition is the way to go.
Who is right?
