I have a lennox heat pump. The issue: If you turn the power off on the air, let the machine rest for 10-15 minutes, when you turn the cold back on everything will work for anywhere from an hour to several hours.
When the unit is about to fail, the cold line from the compressor begins to get warm and then the compressor eventually heats up to the point it stops compressing (but it will remain hot until the system has had it's cold shut off for awhile).
Had some guys out to look at the unit, these guys saw the unit at the point the compressor was heating up. They put their gauges on and saw "high pressure". They cycled the power and the compressor started working like normal, cold line became cold again and pressures were normal. These guys decided that the problem was the TXV but they didn't text the TXV or bulb at all, just shined a light on it.
They send a different guy out to replace the TXV, when he gets here the compressor has succumbed to heat and is not working. As far as I know he doesn't cycle the power or turn the cold off inside (perhaps he did it outside) but he decides the compressor is shot and that's the problem because he can't get it to start back up.
After the second guy leaves, I cycle the power like I've been doing for a week and the compressor starts right up, cold line is cold.
I talked to a manager/supervisor and he said the first guys should have tested the TXV bulb (after I told him no one did) and someone will be out to check the bulb tomorrow.
My question is, are these guys fucking with me? Are they incompetent? Or does this all sound normal to you?
TLDR; first guy says it's TEV but doesn't test TEV.
Second guy says it's compressor but doesn't do what I tell him to do to get the compressor to start.
Manager/Supervisor assumed first guy checked the TEV, assumed second guy put in a capacitor to try to get the compressor to start (he did not, that had been there for years), and wants to sell me on replacing everything, including my furnace.
I work part time, I have a disabled child, I'm not made of money. What should I do?
