Hello! I recently got around to cleaning my electronic air filter for the first time. It's a White Rodgers electro-air SST and a Rheem Criterion furnace, probably at least 20 years old but I'm not sure.
I read all the instructions online about how to do this beforehand. I took them out, filled the laundry tub with water and some dish soap, soaked them for about 40 minutes, rinsed them with a hose, and let them air dry in the sun for about 2 hours. Then I let them sit on the floor in the house for another 6 hours or so, reinstalled them, but didn't even use it for 4 days after that because the temps were nice.
Despite this, something went wrong when I turned it back on. I turned on the filter, then turned on the A/C. I heard a lot of arcing/snapping - this sound is normal I think, but it was non-stop - for a few seconds, and then silence. I went downstairs and the light on the filter was off. Now no matter what I do the light won't come back on. I tried removing both cells and the light still doesn't come on, making me think the power pack is dead.
I read that you could run the blower with the filter off for a bit to help dry them. I didn't do this, but I was certain it would've been dry after sitting in the sun and several days passing. Plus I didn't think them being wet would break it, just maybe cause extra arcing until it's dry. Also when I took it back out, I saw some dust between the plates that I missed. This probably caused the excess arcing when I first turned it on. Again, I thought this would just cause extra arcing, not actually damage the power pack in anyway.
So my questions are, what did I do wrong? And what should my next step be? I've read about replacing these cells entirely with a media filter, but will that be bad for airflow? I don't know if it's designed to only work with a certain type and don't want to make the system have to work harder.
Thanks!
