Is this an acceptable install?

A friend is having a nightmare of a time getting a Lennox system installed and operating. The evap coil originally was installed and charged with a fixed orifice but needed a TXV field installed. My friend sent me several pictures of the installation. Does the installation of the TXV look acceptable? The location of the unit is right at the base of the stairs and is very exposed. I understand that the TXV can be located externally (although in my limited experience I've never seen it as such), but with the copper coil going to the bulb exposed and it's location, we're worried it could be damaged. It would have been preferred if it was installed in the case. Is this an acceptable installation and we're being overly anal retentive, or ideally should it have been installed differently?

There have been numerous shoddy workmanship issues with the install. The furnace and AC took two days to install and the company has had to come back 3 additional times and it still doesn't cool. Loud gurgling can be heard at the TXV before you even reach the base of the stairs of the basement. The recorded operating pressures on the startup sheet are barely within the unit's specified range (suction: 130psi, liquid: 295psi @ 83.6 degrees outside temp). Subcooling is right on the button at 5 degrees if the tech's numbers are to believed and approach is 6.4 when the sticker says it should be 8. May the system still have a low charge causing the gurgling? There's a 19 degree drop across the coil but the until ran for 6 hours cooling the house from 80 degrees to 75. At 9PM the outside temperature was actually 2 degrees cooler than inside.

My friend is at the point where she's tired of dealing with this installer and just wants them to take there system and go with someone else who can get it install right. I don't blame her since she's had to take 30 hours of time off across 5 days. But I'm not sure if the company will go for that. After 30 hours and 5 days of not having a pretty basic working system, is going with someone else a legitimate gripe or an emotional overreaction?
